Hyper-vigilant a little too soon
October 31 2008 |
A friend, Lisa, asked for some feedback today regarding her second date with a new guy. He’s a member of the Director’s Guild in Los Angles and gets to preview new films before they are released at theaters. It’s a great perk that certain film industry unions offer.
Before Lisa and her date left for the movie, he said, “Well, if we don’t like the film we can always leave. There’s no charge so nothing lost.” Having been in the film business and LA being such a movie Mecca, he probably assumed that a lot of people know about the “free” films. Lisa did not. Well, the fact that he mentioned that the film was not going to cost him triggered her. The word “triggered” is an interesting word that I will write about from time to time, but for now I assume you know what triggered means.
Lisa wondered if he was being cheap by mentioning that the film was not going to cost him.
I suggested she relax and get to know him better and then make evaluations. A free film is a nice way to share leisure time with someone. The fact that it was free didn’t necessarily mean the guy’s a spendthrift. She said, “I guess I was being hyper-vigilant. Sometimes you need a friend to get a little perspective on a situation. I’ll get back to after date number three.” By the way, Lisa’s a brilliant, thoughtful, feminine artist!
